The Mysterious Demon of Dark Souls 2
It’s pretty clear a bunch of us here at IGN have once again come down with a case of Dark Souls fever. Between our exclusive gameplay reveal and sit-down chat with the game’s lead designer, we’re once-again itching to kindle a bonfire.
While there are still countless questions surrounding the highly-anticipated sequel, one major mystery sprang from our Rewind Theater of the new Despair trailer. At two separate moments throughout the minute-long look at DSII, you can catch a brief glimpse of an unknown, but certainly menacing demon. The first time is 52 seconds into the trailer, while the second flash is at 54. This creature only appears for a frame or two, so it’s entirely possible to miss the beast altogether.
Who is this monster, and why was From Software so keen on hiding him within the trailer? Is this just the studio toying with its eagerly analytical fans, or is there something far more important to be gleaned from this tease? Both times, the demon is sandwiched between shots of the now-iconic knight that has been at the center of everything From Soft has shown of DSII. This leads me to believe that the Diablo-esque creature has some relation to our hero that exists deeper than just some random enemy that stands in his path.
We know that the basic premise of Dark Souls II revolves around a hero’s quest to find the cure for some unknown curse. Could this curse resemble a possession, and if so, is this demon the dark half of the hero that is slowly consuming him? Are we onto something here, or are we grasping at straws in the midst of our newly rekindled Dark Souls fever-dream?
